WHAT’S TO THINK ABOUT
There is enough to think about for ages and ages to come. We do not have the capacity, the time, or the brainwork to reminisce over the things of this world from the perspective of God. We can only imagine. We look through the glass darkly. There will be a time when knowledge will be perfected. Yet, today is not that day. We need to continue this work of exegesis from multiple perspectives.
I have categorized my thoughts into six sections or buckets.
COMPARATIVE RELIGION
Comparative religion is the study of different religious systems, exploring their beliefs, rituals, and practices to identify both commonalities and differences. It examines various traditions such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and others, seeking to understand how religions shape and reflect cultures, worldviews, and spiritual experiences. This field promotes deeper insights into the nature of religion and its impact on society, often blending philosophy, history, and anthropology in its approach.
OLD TESTAMENT
Old Testament studies is the academic exploration of the Hebrew Bible (or Old Testament), focusing on its texts, history, and religious significance. Scholars analyze books like Genesis, Exodus, Psalms, and Isaiah, investigating their literary forms, theological messages, and historical contexts. This field examines the origins and development of ancient Israelite religion, law, prophecy, and wisdom literature, contributing to the understanding of Jewish and Christian traditions. It often incorporates archaeology, linguistics, and comparative religion in its analysis.
NEW TESTAMENT
New Testament studies is an academic field that examines the texts, context, and theology of the New Testament, the second part of the Christian Bible. Scholars analyze its books, such as the Gospels, Acts, Epistles, and Revelation, to understand their historical, literary, and theological significance. This discipline explores the life and teachings of Jesus, the formation of early Christian communities, and the development of Christian doctrines, often incorporating history, archaeology, and linguistics in its analysis.
INDIAN RELIGION
For a former Hindu who is now a Christian, studying Indian religion becomes imperative to understand my spiritual roots and the cultural context from which they emerged. It provides insight into the beliefs, practices, and worldview that was once embraced, enabling a deeper appreciation of our Christian faith. This study fosters empathy, equips us for meaningful dialogue with others, and strengthens our ability to share the gospel effectively within the Indian religious framework.
JEWISH HERITAGE
Jewish heritage encompasses the cultural, religious, and historical legacy of the Jewish people. It includes their ancient traditions, beliefs, and practices rooted in Judaism, as well as contributions to global culture through art, literature, philosophy, and science. This heritage is shaped by a long history of resilience, from the biblical era to the Diaspora and beyond, preserving a strong sense of identity through rituals, holidays, language (like Hebrew and Yiddish), and a deep connection to Israel.
MISSIONS
Missions refers to the efforts of Christians to spread the teachings of Jesus Christ, often through evangelism, humanitarian aid, and community service. Rooted in the Great Commission from the New Testament, it involves sharing the gospel message to willing and able individuals, establish new churches, and support spiritual growth of the community. Christian missions focus on both local and global outreach, addressing physical needs like education and healthcare while promoting faith, moral transformation, and discipleship within diverse communities.
